Exercises for Paraplegics Offered at Wheeling YMCASpending most of your life in a wheelchair might mean sitting idle for some folks. But not for George Adese.
Adese, 45, of Wheeling has been a paraplegic for 24 years after
sustaining a spinal cord injury. He joined the Chambers YMCA in Elm
Grove a year ago and started his wellness program by participating in
the “Silver Sneakers” class there geared to senior citizens
and those with limited mobility. “But a lot of the
exercises they do include the legs,” he said. “I
wasn’t able to do a lot of these, and I found myself feeling out
of place much of the time with nothing to do.”

Restorative Therapies Announces FDA Clearance of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Arm Cycling

Restorative Therapies, Inc., a designer of medical
devices providing clinic and in-home restoration therapy, today
announced FDA clearance of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Arm
Cycling as part of its successful medical device, the RT300, an FES
motorized cycle ergometer.Restorative Therapies, Inc., advances its new era
in treatment for neurological injury and paralysis as this FDA
clearance marks the world's first commercial release of Functional
Electrical Stimulation (FES) for Arm Cycling.
In the treatment of neurological damage, FES is used to evoke physical
activity and exercise not otherwise possible for individuals with a
neurological impairment. This latest RT300 capability delivers
electrical currents to stimulate nerves which activate arm muscles
including the biceps, triceps, supraspinatus, anterior and posterior
deltoids and the muscles of the forearm. This enables a patient's
paralyzed or weak arms to move through patterned physical activity
utilizing their own muscles.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and time to remember that even women with spinal cord injuries are at risk.

I try to follow guidelines set up by the medical community so when I
turned 40, it was time for a mammogram. The only time I saw a mammogram
machine was on television during “October is Breast Awareness
Month”—a barrage of commercials and news flashes from the
health expert during the six o’clock news. The only problem with
the examination I saw was that every woman was standing. Now the
ability to stand has not been in my repertoire since I broke my neck
and damaged my spinal cord over 20 years ago. So I assumed that having
a mammogram would be out of the question.
	Breast cancer is
predominant on Long Island. A little park there is adorned with a pink
ribbon and a sign that says, “One of Nine.” I’m not
very good at math but statistically speaking I could actually be the
one in nine. The question is how would I know?

Being a teenage girl is difficult. Being a teenage girl with a spinal cord injury is even tougher.
Just going to the mall with your girlfriends to try on cute
clothes can be a logistical nightmare for a young girl confined to a
wheelchair. Jessica Greenfield knows this firsthand. The Indiana teenager
suffered a spinal cord injury after a diving accident. She gets
rehabilitation therapy at Shriners Hospital in Chicago, which provides
free treatment to children with spinal cord injuries and other
conditions.

Less than a year after breaking her back in a horseriding accident, Katie Estrella rides again."That was a testament that miracles do happen," said the announcer. The miracle wasn't that Katie finished, it was that she was riding at all. Last
year on Mother's Day, Katie was competing in a similar horse show in
Riverside County when her horse bucked her off. Instead of getting up
and brushing herself off, as she had done numerous times before, Katie
laid there, her back broken in the fall. The T4 spinal cord injury cut
sensation from her mid-chest down.

2006 began with despair for the Ryan family of Highland Lakes. By the end of the year, it was filled with hope.Last
February, the Ryan’s oldest son, Michael, then 18, was taking his
first snowboarding run of the day at Loon Mountain in New Hampshire
with his brother, Eric, 15, and friend C.J. when he overshot a jump and
landed on his back, shattering his tenth vertebra. A few hours later,
doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston told
Michael’s parents, Mike and Kim, that their son had severed his
spinal cord and would never walk again.

With a pen held in his teeth, Rick Young carefully marked an X on his marriage certificate.
It was a struggle.
He had to try twice.
But it was important.
As a quadriplegic, there are many things Rick cannot do on his own -
breathe, eat, move - but professing his love for his childhood
sweetheart was one thing he had to do.
