Published 01/31/2007 | January 2007 , Athletics | Rating:

Donations roll in for Plano East junior, who faces more surgery today

Ammon Butcher was never a star as a high school wrestler. His coach at Plano East described him as a "program kid," the kind who might never win a state title but loves the sport anyway.

Ever since Butcher lost feeling from the chest down after being injured in a match Jan. 12, he's become one of the most recognizable names in area wrestling circles.

» Survey of Pain and Fatigue in Adults with Disabilities
Published 01/28/2007 | Research , January 2007 | Unrated

Pain and fatigue are the most common patient-reported symptoms cutting across a broad range of chronic diseases and conditions. They often occur together, yet the association has not been adequately studied and understood, and we lack adequate knowledge about the longitudinal patterns of pain and fatigue.

The specific aims of this project are: 1) to develop a psychometrically validated instrument or battery of instruments for measuring pain, fatigue, social participation, emotional distress, and physical functioning in persons with disabilities; 2) to improve current measures of patient-reported outcomes; and 3) to increase scientific understanding of the course of pain and fatigue and their associations with important outcome measures including depression, participation, and disability level.

Our primary hypothesis is that both pain and fatigue will be significantly associated with participation, contributing above and beyond the effects of depression and disability. We also expect the magnitude of the effect to differ depending on medical diagnosis (multiple sclerosis (MS) or spinal cord injury (SCI).

The proposed study involves two phases:(1) one initial survey of 1000 individuals with MS and SCI (500 of each); and (2) five follow-up surveys at four month intervals of 300 individuals from the initial survey.

Maryann Soucy and Daniel Spradley went bowling on their first date in 2005. Last week they bowled again - Danny's first outing since August.

"I used to be so athletic. I worked hard," says Danny, currently in rehabilitation at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain. "I struggle now to put on my shirt," a task he wrestled with for five months after being told he would never move his arms again.

"I can't put on my sweater. My muscle strength isn't there yet," Danny says. But "I'm hoping to be home by June 16. My goal is to be somewhat self-sufficient" by then, his 28th birthday.

He and Maryann are planning their wedding for the summer of 2008. "That will give me plenty of time to heal up more. I dream about me walking again. I do think I will be able to move my legs again in the next year."
» Eigen’s spinal injury leads Old Forge community to rally around athlete
Published 01/28/2007 | January 2007 , Athletics | Rating:
The impact fractured his C5 vertebrae and injured his spinal cord.

Now a 14-year-old eighth grader fighting his greatest battle from a wheelchair, Eigen has inspired an already passionate sports community as Old Forge’s most vocal basketball fan. He sits in the corner of the floor, always decked out in blue and gold, wearing a Blue Devils wristband monogrammed with his No. 2.

As the starting lineup is announced, each player runs to Eigen and gives a high-five.
» Trockman crowned king
Published 01/27/2007 | Community Living , January 2007 | Rating:
It's good to be the king

The other students just stepped forward for their introductions as members of the Harrison High School homecoming court Friday night but classmate Ben Trockman was one up on them when his turn came.

Grinning big, Trockman spun his electric wheelchair around several times and waited with the others for the announcer to call the king and queen, chosen by a student vote earlier in the day. Trockman, 18, suffered a broken neck and spinal cord injury in a motorcycle accident last spring that left him with limited movement below the shoulders.

» Year after paralyzing injury, player strides back to Cornell
Published 01/27/2007 | January 2007 , Athletics | Rating:
It has been a year since a collision on a basketball court changed Khaliq Gant's life, and the lives of those closest to him, forever.

At first sight, nothing about Gant illustrates the ordeal he has been through to make it back to the Cornell University campus.

There's no wheelchair. No cane. Not even a distinguishable limp.

He lifts weights regularly with his Cornell basketball teammates and looks more like an athlete rehabbing an ankle injury during workouts with trainer Marc Chamberlain than one returning from major spinal cord surgery.

Biker Steve Booker has been discharged from Sheffield Hospital spinal unit six months after he broke his neck in a Superstocks qualifying accident at Snetterton in Norfolk.
