Everett, Buoniconti Injuries Highlight Advances Of Last 20 Years

Kevin Everett and Marc Buoniconti each suffered a severe spinal cord injury while making a tackle. The difference between them on Friday was the result of more than 20 years of research.

Buoniconti has used a wheelchair since being paralyzed while playing football for The Citadel in 1985.

Kevin Everett and Marc Buoniconti each suffered a severe spinal cord injury while making a tackle. The difference between them on Friday was the result of more than 20 years of research.

Buoniconti has used a wheelchair since being paralyzed while playing football for The Citadel in 1985.

Everett walked through the lobby of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis just about seven months after he crumpled face-down on the turf following a tackle in which his helmet struck another player's helmet and shoulder pad.

A television presenter who broke her back says many people with similar injuries are being forced to live in care homes.

Victoria Hollingsworth shattered her spine in a car accident while filming Channel 4's property programme A Place in the Sun in Spain.

She has now made a report for Radio 4's You and Yours programme about patients who cannot return home because their properties are not suitable for wheelchairs.

The accident three years ago left Victoria with five broken ribs, a punctured lung and a spine shattered in three places.

Imagine buying tickets to a sporting event and arriving at the stadium to find out you cannot get to or fit into your seat.

People in wheelchairs have dealt with this problem for ages, often opting out of attending public events.

A recent agreement between Novi-based Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America and the University of Michigan will change things however, and make more seats available at Michigan Stadium, better known as the Big House, throughout the course of the next two years.

Exercises for Paraplegics Offered at Wheeling YMCA

Spending most of your life in a wheelchair might mean sitting idle for some folks. But not for George Adese.

Adese, 45, of Wheeling has been a paraplegic for 24 years after sustaining a spinal cord injury. He joined the Chambers YMCA in Elm Grove a year ago and started his wellness program by participating in the “Silver Sneakers” class there geared to senior citizens and those with limited mobility.

“But a lot of the exercises they do include the legs,” he said. “I wasn’t able to do a lot of these, and I found myself feeling out of place much of the time with nothing to do.”

After reading the paralysed techie's story in TOI, 33-year-old Australian Perry Cross, who too suffered a similar injury 14 years ago, and is paralysed neck down, decided to meet Manjunath to given him hope and boost his morale.

It was an emotional meeting. Perry recounted his post-injury days in hospital and Manjunath saw a glimmer of hope. In April 1994, Perry suffered a C2 level spinal cord injury during a football match back home. After spending more than a year in hospital, Perry was rehabilitated with the help of latest technology and good nursing assistance.

It has been more than two years since officer James Poindexter's tragic motorcycle accident.  He suffered a spinal cord injury that left him quadrapalegic.  Now, he's encountered another obstacle - he no longer has insurance coverage for his medical expenses.  Tonight, friends and family are pulling support from the community with a spaghetti dinner that began this evening. 

James also worked with 7News, he was the Crimestoppers Officer when he had his accident.  His fellow officers say when James was injured, they not only lost a great officer - they almost lost a friend.  Many officers say James Poindexter was an extraordinary officer.  He made great things happen - he carried the Crimestoppers program, he started the Citizens Patrol Academy, he was a member of the SWAT Team...and, that just to name a few of his accomplishments.

The black tuxedo was handsomely tailored, and the burgundy vest was a nice touch. The black shoes were polished perfectly, and the sunlight streaming in from a nearby window shone brightly off the diamonds in the watch on his left wrist.

But none of that stood out about Kevin Everett on this evening.

It was the walk.

A man who was told he would never walk again has taken his first steps since suffering a tragic accident.

Guy Harris was left with a spinal cord injury after being hit by a lorry in 2003 which left him paralysed from the waist down.

Doctors told him he would never walk again and tried to prepare him for the worst.

An Atlanta rehabilitation hospital will provide free care to wounded military veterans who need brain or spinal cord injury services that aren't covered by the government, hospital officials said Monday.

The Shepherd Center, which treats spinal cord and brain injuries, has promised to provide a range of testing, care and rehabilitation services. It's part of a philanthropic effort driven by Bernie Marcus, the co-founder of Home Depot Inc.
