Kevin Everett and Marc Buoniconti each suffered a severe spinal cord
injury while making a tackle. The difference between them on Friday was
the result of more than 20 years of research.
Buoniconti has used a wheelchair since being paralyzed while playing football for The Citadel in 1985.
Everett walked through the lobby of The Miami Project to Cure
Paralysis just about seven months after he crumpled face-down on the
turf following a tackle in which his helmet struck another player's
helmet and shoulder pad.

Broken back can leave you homeless
|
|
A television presenter who broke her back says many people with similar injuries are being forced to live in care homes.
Victoria Hollingsworth shattered her spine in a car accident while
filming Channel 4's property programme A Place in the Sun in Spain. She has now made a report for Radio 4's You and Yours
programme about patients who cannot return home because their
properties are not suitable for wheelchairs.
The accident three years ago left Victoria with five broken ribs, a punctured lung and a spine shattered in three places.

Paralyzed Veterans win battle for Big House seating
|
|
Imagine buying tickets to a sporting event and arriving at the stadium to find out you cannot get to or fit into your seat.
People in wheelchairs have dealt with this problem for ages, often opting out of attending public events.
A recent agreement between Novi-based Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of
America and the University of Michigan will change things however, and
make more seats available at Michigan Stadium, better known as the Big
House, throughout the course of the next two years.

Exercises for Paraplegics Offered at Wheeling YMCA
Spending most of your life in a wheelchair might mean sitting idle for some folks. But not for George Adese.
Adese, 45, of Wheeling has been a paraplegic for 24 years after
sustaining a spinal cord injury. He joined the Chambers YMCA in Elm
Grove a year ago and started his wellness program by participating in
the “Silver Sneakers” class there geared to senior citizens
and those with limited mobility.
“But a lot of the
exercises they do include the legs,” he said. “I
wasn’t able to do a lot of these, and I found myself feeling out
of place much of the time with nothing to do.”

Now, Aussie hope for Manjunath
|
|
After reading the paralysed techie's story in TOI, 33-year-old
Australian Perry Cross, who too suffered a similar injury 14 years ago, and is
paralysed neck down, decided to meet Manjunath to given him hope and boost his
morale.
It was an emotional meeting. Perry recounted his post-injury
days in hospital and Manjunath saw a glimmer of hope. In April 1994, Perry
suffered a C2 level spinal cord injury during a football match back home. After
spending more than a year in hospital, Perry was rehabilitated with the help of
latest technology and good nursing assistance.

Fellow officers raise funds for James Poindexter
|
|
It has been more than two years since
officer James Poindexter's tragic motorcycle accident. He
suffered a spinal cord injury that left him quadrapalegic. Now,
he's encountered another obstacle - he no longer has insurance coverage
for his medical expenses. Tonight, friends and family are pulling
support from the community with a spaghetti dinner that began this
evening. James also worked with 7News, he was the
Crimestoppers Officer when he had his accident. His fellow
officers say when James was injured, they not only lost a great officer
- they almost lost a friend. Many officers say James Poindexter
was an extraordinary officer. He made great things happen - he
carried the Crimestoppers program, he started the Citizens Patrol
Academy, he was a member of the SWAT Team...and, that just to name a
few of his accomplishments.

Everett's Recovery Is a 'Blessing'
|
|
The black tuxedo was handsomely tailored, and the burgundy vest was
a nice touch. The black shoes were polished perfectly, and the sunlight
streaming in from a nearby window shone brightly off the diamonds in
the watch on his left wrist.
But none of that stood out about Kevin Everett on this evening.
It was the walk.

|
|
An Atlanta rehabilitation hospital will provide free care to wounded
military veterans who need brain or spinal cord injury services that
aren't covered by the government, hospital officials said Monday.
The Shepherd Center, which treats spinal cord and brain injuries, has
promised to provide a range of testing, care and rehabilitation
services. It's part of a philanthropic effort driven by Bernie Marcus,
the co-founder of Home Depot Inc.
