» AM General plans to begin making vehicle in 2010

AM General, which produces the Hummer H2 for General Motors Corp., hopes to begin making wheelchair-accessible transit vehicles for a Michigan company at its plant in Mishawaka in 2010.

The new vehicle includes an automatic ramp that will provide quick and easy access for individuals who use wheelchairs, motorized scooters and other mobility devices.

Terence J. Moakley, director of the United Spinal Association's Taxis For All- North America project, reversed his wheelchair into the Standard Taxi prototype, the first factory-built sedan taxi that also incorporates wheelchair access features such as a front wheelchair seating location and a recessed access ramp at the National Accessible Taxi Summit in New York City, April 11. Moakley has been actively involved in the accessible taxi movement since 1996 and is recognized as one of the nation's leading experts on wheelchair-accessible taxicabs. Manufacture of the Standard Taxi is set to begin in 2008.
» ‘Wheels in Motion’ money to buy signage

Some of the money raised at last year’s Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion event last year in Whistler will be used to enhance signage for those with disabilities in Whistler, Rick Hansen Man in Motion Foundation officials said this week.

Each June, thousands of people wheel, walk or run to raise money at Wheels in Motion events that aim to improve the quality of life of people with spinal cord injury, and for research leading to a cure.
» Golden gains wheelchair access

The efforts of a handful of racers and organizers are helping make Golden a better place to live for people in wheelchairs.

Funds raised at last June’s fourth annual Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion event in Golden will go towards improving parking spaces in the downtown corridor of Golden. Locals Rob McKeeman and Dave Clapperton co-ordinated the race and, through their efforts, more than $3,900 was raised.

The Rick Hansen Foundation confirmed last week that more than $1,500 will stay in Golden for a project to help people with spinal cord injuries.

Surles suffered a spinal cord injury in the october third, 2001 crash that left her a paraplegic.

The Sixth U-S Circuit Court of Appeals Thursday upheld a jury's August 2005 verdict awarding eight million dollars in compensatory damages to Surles after a seven day trial.

A new British-made motorcycle for wheelchair users was the star of this year's Mobility Roadshow in the UK.

The Conquest is based on BMW 850 or 1150 motorbikes which have been integrated into a racing car-type aluminium body shell.

Adapting and overcoming odds is what the Marine Corps is all about, and Queen is no stranger to that. That is why Gunnery Sgt. Lance Dobine, S-4 officer for H&SBn., suggested that Queen speak with the Marines of H&SBn. during a safety brief at the Depot Theater June 30.

Man's Wheelchair Was Anchored To Burning Vehicle's Floor

ALBANY, Ind. -- Good Samaritans and a police officer freed a quadriplegic man from his van Monday after it caught fire on a road outside Muncie, Ind., officials said.

Todd Buchanan, 39, of Indianapolis, said he was sitting in his wheelchair in the driver's compartment of his van when it caught on fire.

Buchanan pulled the van off the road and three men, Allen Webster, Jeff Tapley and Bruce Smith, came to help him, RTV6's Kristi Tedesco reported.

 FRIENDSWOOD, Texas - A motorist injured after a crash lay paralyzed in the middle of the Gulf Freeway with a broken neck for 36 hours before he was rescued.

Ed Theisen's plight was blocked from the view of passing cars by some traffic barricades.
