 It would be understandable if Kelly Brush filled her days with what-ifs.
What
if the fencing along the giant slalom course at Jiminy Peak had been
better? What if the padding on the chair lift tower had been thicker?
What if she hadn't caught that edge?
But those questions don't yield any substantive answers. They
are part of a past that Brush, a senior at Middlebury College who was
paralyzed in a ski racing accident two years ago, doesn't see the need
to dwell in.

bushland following recent widespread flooding in Queensland.

CEO John Mayo said that the floods had caused many unexpected changes

Seattle Seahawks fullback Mack Strong has a spinal cord condition
that is ending his career immediately - but not affecting his quality
of life. And for that, the 36-year-old Pro Bowler, husband and father of two is grateful. "I've
played a long time, 15 years. I felt like I was pretty lucky, pretty
blessed," a teary-eyed Strong said Monday after learning that a
herniated disk in his neck is pinching his spinal cord - and ending an
unheralded, improbable career that began as an undrafted free agent out
of Georgia in 1993.

High schools take care to tackle spine injuries

A Toronto-based sports therapist who has attended to teenaged
athletes injured in games during the past 25 years says the number of
catastrophic injuries in high school football is low – but he's
concerned with the increase in head injuries and fractures. Jim
Panno, owner of Panno Therapeutic Inc., said more emphasis is needed by
coaches when it comes to educating athletes – particularly those
playing tackle football – on how to avoid serious injury.

New DVD aimed at reducing spinal injuries

Football players usually hoot and holler when viewing tapes of bone-crunching hits.
Recently, however, the West Florida High Jaguars could only gasp and cringe as they watched clip after clip of tackles that broke necks and damaged brains.
That's the reaction Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy and a coalition of sports doctors and trainers hope to get with "Heads Up," a DVD being distributed to high school football teams nationwide.

Indian origin researcher finds seatbelts increase serious injury risk in kids

Indian origin researcher Harsh
Grewal and colleagues at Temple University have found that ill-fitting
seatbelts increase the risk of serious injury particularly spinal cord
injury to children involved in car accidents.
As part of the study, researchers reviewed 10 years' worth of medical literature on motor vehicle accidents and children.
The
study found that children involved in car accidents who were
inappropriately strapped in seatbelts were at higher risk for
'seat-belt syndrome,' a complex of injuries to the spine and abdomen.

Web daredevils risk lives

 YOUNG daredevils
are flirting with disaster for the entire world to see in an alarming
new wave of "Free Running" footage that is making its way onto YouTube.
Based on the French sport parkour, free running is the latest extreme
sport
to hit Australian shores, and has been described as the "art" of
defying gravity by leaping off or between concrete buildings at great
heights.
There are no safety harnesses, no nets and certainly no emergency
services on standby; with teens as young as 15 and 16 competing to see
who is brave enough to leap from the greatest height.

Local woman's death points to trampoline risks
|

Last week's death of a Loveland woman while she jumped on a trampoline
with her children was rare, but injuries on the device are common.
Most trampoline-related accidents do not result in severe injury, said
Dr. Donald Peck Leslie, medical director at Shepherd Center, a leading
rehabilitation center in Atlanta, Ga.
"Often we see long bone injuries in the arms or legs," Leslie said. "It's a rare occurrence to see death."

Mt. Airy Girl Is Paralyzed During Pool Party

 MT. AIRY, Md.
It started as a pool party at the Shumaker's home in Mt. Airy, Frederick County, but it ended in tragedy.
As Richard Sher
reports, 12-year-old Stacey Shumaker jumped into the backyard pool and
hit her head on the side. She broke her neck and is now paralyzed.
Stacey is a patient at Kennedy Krieger Institute, which has an international center for spinal cord injuries.
Janice and Bill Shumaker came to Eyewitness News to warn other parents and children, hoping to prevent similar accidents.
