Published 05/5/2008 | Experience , May 2008 | Unrated
After John Pou was paralyzed, he embarked on an arduous path of rehab

It was only a chair, but it had become his purgatory.

Each day that John Pou spent in the wheelchair, his spirit seemed to die a little more. It was a perpetual reminder of the calamity that had brought him and Marci, even the kids, to this place.

The chair stood for all that was lost: A promising career, a vigorous life spent fishing the lakes of North Carolina, future plans conjured when things were perfect — plans that seemed impossible now.

The attorney lay awake in his hospital room, listening.

Even now, in the cold November dawn, helicopters landed, sirens wailed and respirators hummed with purpose. Nothing ever stopped at Harborview Medical Center.

And Mickey Gendler had a front-row seat to it all.

As he lay there, he replayed the accident a thousand times. The moment his bike tire caught in the grate. The flip over his handlebars. Later, his wife's face when they heard the words "spinal-cord injury."

The accident three years ago left Victoria with five broken ribs, a punctured lung and a spine shattered in three places.

Some people believe everything happens for a reason. Even a tragedy, difficult at first to comprehend, may leave the survivor feeling that he or she has a higher purpose. Tiffany Jones believes this. And her family is buoyed by the strength of her faith. But in the meantime, there is the reality to face.

Only two months after a terrible accident that may leave her paralyzed from the chest down and confined to a wheelchair, 18-year-old Tiffany Jones has the fortitude of her faith and the boundless enthusiasm of youth to help her endure and give her hope. Her parents, Jeff and Lisa Jones of West Jefferson, are comforted by her amazingly positive attitude and this helps lift them from despair to do what they need to do on her behalf.

“She’s always been one who believes things happen for a reason,” said Tiffany’s mother, Lisa Jones. “That God is in control.”

Every once in a while, a story reaches out and inexplicably grabs a hold of you. I was surfing the 2008 mountain bike models at Giant's site I came across a link called Heart of a Champion. I followed the link and it led me to a blog detailing the great recovery efforts that Tara Llanes is making against spinal cord injuries she sustained during the Jeep King of the Mountain series on September 1st, 2007.

On Saturday September 1, 2007, Tara had a horrible crash at the Jeep King of the Mountain series finale in Beaver Creek Colorado. During a semi-final heat with the eventual race winner, Jill Kintner, Tara entered the second to last straight on the course and hit an obstacle that sent her over the handlebars, coming down hard on her head then back. She was rushed to Vail Valley Medical Center, and then airlifted to Denver Health Medical Center where a specialty spinal cord team worked on her for seven hours over Saturday night. Tara's crash caused a fracture to the C7 and L1 vertebra and damaged her spinal cord, resulting in a below-the-waist paralysis, a condition her surgeons say is most likely permanent.
