PE teacher tackles charity event just four years after breaking back

A PE teacher from Llanfair Caereinion will cycle from London to Paris just four years after breaking her back.

In 2004 Sian Harries, 25, came within millimetres of being paralysed for life when she suffered a tragic accident on a trip to Australia, however just four years on she will now complete a 300-mile journey from London to Paris to raise funds for Spinal Research UK.

A University of Alberta researcher who developed a device to help patients with spinal cord injuries walk was awarded a $50,000 grant on Wednesday.

Dr. Dick Stein was awarded the grant, from a foundation created by Toronto journalist Barbara Turnbull, at a ceremony in Edmonton. Turnbull was left a quadriplegic at age 18 after she was shot during a convenience store robbery.

State Senators gave a boost Wednesday to efforts to put Indiana at the forefront of medical research to treat patients with spinal cord and brain injuries.

Senators approved a plan to keep the research funding flowing while also replacing a controversial fee that motorcycle owners had complained was unfair.

By a vote of 47-0, the Senate approved the plan, House Bill 1318.

Elizabeth Fust was part of a crowd Monday honoring University of Louisville researchers who won $4.7 million in federal grants. For Fust, the ceremony was more personal, knowing she might someday benefit from the search for new spinal cord injury treatments.

Fust, paralyzed from the waist down since a spinal cord stroke two years ago, said the highly sought grants show cutting-edge research is taking place in her hometown.

"I'm thrilled that I don't have to go somewhere else in the country ... to see this science come to fruition," the 40-year-old lawyer said in an interview.

Foundation Continues Research Initiatives in Search of a Cure and Therapies for Paralysis

The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation (CDRF), which is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy, today announced it has awarded $1,996,745 million to 16 laboratories through its Individual Research Grants Program. At the forefront of molecular and cellular studies, CDRF's Individual Research Grant Program is the Foundation's largest, most comprehensive research initiative. The grants awarded today represent an overall $77 million commitment to research by the Foundation since 1982.

The House passed a bill yesterday that will shift the cost of research for spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries to all Hoosier vehicle owners -- not just those who have motorcycles.

House Bill 1318 eliminates a controversial $10 fee that lawmakers added to motorcycle registrations last year, a move that irritated bikers across the state.

Rep. Dan Leonard, R-Huntington, questioned Rep. Carolene Mays, D-Indianapolis, yesterday about her bill that would impose a 50-cent fee on all vehicle registrations to pay for research into brain and spinal cord injuries.
» Paralyzed woman helps raise funds for research

A Cumberland woman who sustained a paralyzing spinal cord injury six years ago is using her abilities to help deal with her disability.

Jyl and Donnie Waters founded the Spinal Cord Organization for Research and Enrichment following Jyl's 2002 fall from a forklift. The Iowa-based organization recently donated $20,000 to the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Md.

NFL Hands Grant to Miami Project, Which Helped Bills' Kevin Everett Recover From Spinal Injury

The NFL has awarded a $113,000 grant to the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, which played a role in Bills tight end Kevin Everett's recovery from a serious spinal cord injury.

The Miami Project, the world's largest spinal cord injury research center, will use the grant money to further its cutting-edge research into hypothermic therapy, spokesman Scott Roy said Tuesday. Roy added the Miami Project will continue applying for further league grants.

David Bailey and FRC to Support Spinal Cord Injury Research and Will Give Away an RM-Z450

FantasyRacer.com and Supercross Champion David Bailey have teamed up to provide financial support to UC Irvine’s Reeve-Irvine Research Center for spinal cord injury research. The 2008 Fantasy Supercross League will donate a portion of each entry to the research center and give away a new RM-Z450 after the final round of the AMA Supercross Series.
