» Super wheelchair for Rockport man made possible by community
Published 05/15/2007 | May 2007 , Tech Funding | Unrated
The family of Derek O’Brien reports that a fund-raiser held in April produced enough money to allow them to order a $26,000 super wheelchair for him, a piece of equipment which is expected to greatly increase his ability to get around and look after himself.

The following report is provided by his mother, Kathy O’Brien:

When we received the telephone call on July 23, 2005, telling us that Derek had sustained a spinal cord injury in Ocean City, N.J., we had no idea of the long journey that was ahead of Derek and our family. The days turned into weeks, the weeks turned into months, the months turned into seasons, and the seasons have turned into nearly two years of obstacles and challenges.
» Fundraising for charity at the Ironman
Published 02/27/2007 | February 2007 , Tech Funding | Unrated

A small group of dedicated competitors are aiming to achieve more than just completing this weekend's Ironman at Taupo.

They will be completing a fundraising mission that has seem them raise over $26,000 to purchase a piece of equipment for New Zealanders disabled by spinal cord injury - many through sports such as rugby, horse-riding, cycling or skiing.

The Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Bicycle the Ironmen are looking to purchase was originally designed for Superman Christopher Reeves after he was paralysed in a horse-riding accident.
